IBM Shows Winkle

No really.  At the Hot Chips (really) conference in the US, IBM has unveiled a low power mode on Power7 chips called Winkle.  Of course, because the chip is put into a deep sleep, this is reference to Rip Van Winkle.  Of course.

Winkle mode uses up to 85% less power than when the chip is sitting idle but takes up to 20 milliseconds to wake up again.  That doesn’t sound a lot, but in other modes the Power7 chips wake up in under 2 milliseconds so it’s a big increase.
