Deep Blue defeats Kasparov

In a six-game match, IBM’s Deep Blue, an RS/6000 SP computer capable of calculating 200 million chess positions per second, defeats the World Chess Champion, marking the first time a reigning world champion has lost a match to a computer opponent in tournament play.
